He
gifted best gal Dyan Cannon and her entire family with a trip to
Denmark to attend the wedding of Dyan's brother, and then he took
her home to meet his mother and if that isn't proof of honorable
intentions we don't know what is! So what's holding up the
wedding? Obviously Cary's reservations about the 34 years
difference in ages. He's become very age conscious since
hitting 60 even where his screen roles are concerned.
"I'm getting to the stage where I have to be very careful
about love scenes with young actresses," he told a reporter
recently. "The public doesn't like to see an older man
making love to a young girl. It offends them. And I
must say I agree with them. I used to get furious years ago
when Walter Pidgeon was making love to Greer Garson on the
screen. And I'm well aware I can't go on playing romantic
parts much longer. After all I am quite an old fellow to
some young people. But to be honest, I don't know what I
will do. Maybe I will quit. I did once. I packed
it all in and went around the world. I didn't work for 18
months, and I was very happy indeed. I have enough money and
my needs are simple. Yachts, houses, expensive women, what
do I need them for? I indulge in no such
insecurities." But obviously he needs and wants Dyan,
and he is indulging in an insecurity which keeps him from making
her his bride.
